San Francisco Film Locations Then & Now

Gertrude Stein, supposedly, said of Oakland,
“There is no there, there!”
Well, I worked “there, there” for years, and there is a there, there.

Ah, the old Grand Lake Theater, still alive and kicking after all these years.

The temple near Children’s Fairyland which opened in 1950: True story, a visit to Fairyland by Walt Disney inspired him to create Disneyland!

1944 – 14th and Broadway: ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ one of my favorites! I like the couple in the middle.

That’s my 17 year old mom photo left of her cousin Frances at the old Fleishhacker’s Pool in 1939. The top right photo is the army practicing in the pool shortly after Pearl Harbor. Today the pool is buried under the San Francisco Zoo parking lot.

  The army practices for defense at the Presidio during World War ll. And, no, I was taking a picture of the bridge. (I think)

  This picture from the San Francisco Chronicle July 19th, 2015 issue is at the old Funhouse of Playland-at-the-Beach. It must have been taken very close to the time Playland closed in September, 1972.  (Thumbnail image)

This one is a personal then and now of me with my nieces taken in June of 1987. That was the 50th Anniversary candle they painted on the cement Island of the Bay Bridge the previous November, and hadn’t, entirely removed yet. Pier 14, in the news a lot these days, now juts out behind where we were
